‘There have always been thefts from stores’: Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of NYT’s 1619 Project, scolds Al Sharpton for criticizing rampant NYC shoplifting and warns of ‘a drumbeat for continued mass incarceration’

  • Left-wing journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones blasted Rev. Al Sharpton Wednesday over his commentary about rampant petty theft in New York City

  • She accused the civil rights leader of ‘legitimizing the carceral state’ when he called on Mayor Eric Adams saying the city’s crime ‘culture’ was ‘out of control’ 

  • Hannah-Jones argued Sharpton’s concerns over thefts of steak and toothpaste are ‘drumbeat for continued mass incarceration’ and ‘really horrific to watch’

  • Her remarks followed Sharpton’s MSNBC interview arguing theft and crime – which has risen by 42 percent this year – in New York City is ‘out of control’ 

  • He acknowledged that Adams has only been mayor for five weeks, but that didn’t stop him from saying: ‘Eric, they’re locking up my toothpaste’ 

  • Many pharmacies have experienced thefts recently, including one in the Upper East Side, and have begun to shut down stores as shelves are cleared out 

  • He also acknowledged that ‘there is a debate in the criminal justice system’ on how to handle these issues

  • Manhattan’s DA Alvin Bragg has been called out for being ‘soft on crime’ as his controversial policies lower many crimes to misdemeanors   

The left-wing New York Times reporter and creator of the controversial 1619 Project blasted famed activist the Rev. Al Sharpton on Wednesday over his commentary about rampant petty theft in New York City.

Nikole Hannah-Jones – whose 1619 Project initiative aims to reframe American history by placing the consequences of slavery at the center of the national narrative – accused the civil rights leader of ‘legitimizing the carceral state’ during a segment on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, where he discussed an alleged steak theft at a Manhattan Trader Joe’s.

‘This drumbeat for continued mass incarceration is really horrific to watch,’ Hannah-Jones, 45, tweeted.
