Democratic congressman's employee caught vandalizing signs in the Capitol; Department of Justice will not prosecute

The case of Rep. Jake Auchincloss’ chief of staff is sure to renew debate over the dual justice system after the same US Attorney’s office that prosecuted the Jan. 6 defendants dismissed the case.

Capitol Police caught Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Jake Auchincloss’s chief of staff vandalizing signs outside Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Capitol Complex office and referred him for criminal charges, but the same U.S. Attorney’s office that pursued to the defendants on January 6 refused to prosecute him, according to police documents and interviews.

Capitol authorities asked federal prosecutors in March for an arrest warrant for Timothy Hysom, 51, a longtime Democratic congressional staffer who worked for Rep. Adam Schiff before becoming Auchincloss’ top aide.

Security footage shows Hysom damaging Greene’s billboards with stickers bearing religious messages, according to a copy of the arrest warrant obtained by Just the News .

Police said they believed Hysom may have been involved in seven sign vandalizations outside Greene’s office at the Longworth Congressional Office Building between January and March and that he refused to be interviewed when confronted. Hysom was offered a “non-custodial interview and he declined and retained an attorney,” according to the report.

“Based on the foregoing, your affiant believes that the defendant, Timothy Duane Hysom … violated DC Code § 22–3312.01 Defacement of public or private property,” the arrest warrant said.

Officials told Just the News that Greene was told last month that the US attorney’s office in Washington, DC, which has been the lead on the Jan. 6 crimes, rejected prosecution because he didn’t believe a federal judge would allow the case will continue.
